Determined: Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus clenches her fist after winning in two sets.

Will a Belarusian lead the tennis world ranking next week? Quite possible. Aryna Sabalenka (25, WTA 2) shakes the throne from Iga Swiatek (22). After her second Wimbledon semifinal appearance, Sabalenka still needs a win to replace the Pole. She would be the 29th woman to top the rankings.

Laughs at the interview on site

In the quarterfinals, Sabalenka defeated American Madison Keys (28, WTA 18) 6: 2, 6: 4 in 87 minutes. “Thanks for the atmosphere. Even if you supported them more, I still really enjoyed being able to play for you », she says afterwards with a sympathetic grin on her face during the interview on Court No. 1. The crowd, led by Sabalenka’s compatriot Viktoria Asarenka (33, WTA 20) was labeled “quite drunk” on Sunday, laughing out loud.

On Thursday, Sabalenka will now compete with Ons Jabeur (28, WTA 6). The Tunisian needs three sets (6-7, 6-4, 6-1) and 113 minutes in the replay of the 2022 final to knock Kazakh champion Elena Rybakina (24, WTA 3) out of the tournament. The second finalist is determined by Swiatek conqueror Elina Switolina (28, WTA 76) from Ukraine and Czech Marketa Vondrousova (24, WTA 42). (yup)
