Céline Naef gave herself the best gift: four days after her 18th birthday (June 25), she qualified for the main draw of Wimbledon on her very first attempt. There she was eliminated in the first round after two sets against the Russian Anastasia Potapova (22) – but the Grand Slam premiere is a milestone in her young career.
Now she has traded the stage at Wimbledon for a completely different stage. “I got a pink concert for my 18th birthday,” reveals Naef: “Not only do I love her music, she’s a cool personality.” And the American pop-rock singer liked not only her, but the whole family. Mum and coach Sandra, papa Ronald and brother Nicolas are also going on a concert trip to Cologne.
With her loved ones she can retire from tennis and recharge her batteries, says Naef: “The best thing for me is to spend time with my family and be able to hug them after a tournament.”
However, the next tennis break for the Zurich native, who lives in Feusisberg SZ, is practically imminent: at the end of July she will be at the start of the WTA 250 tournament in Lausanne – and will try to stage another coup there to also win on play the WTA ranking to gain more ground. After Wimbledon, she ranks 157th. As good as ever. This is another gift in what are currently very exciting weeks for the greatest young Swiss talent among women.
