It is one of those oddities that only occur in sawdust Switzerland: the reigning wrestling king Joel Wicki (26) has been earning his daily bread in Entlebuch for several weeks with the old monarch Matthias Sempach (37). The 2013 ESAF triumphant has built a fitting shed on his farm in Vorderbrunnen, Wicki is responsible for digging it out with his backhoe.
At the beginning of last week, however, there was an acute danger of explosion at the royal construction site! The reason: On the first Sunday of July, Sempach, as an SRF expert, had harshly criticized the Wickis Central Swiss colleagues Werner Suppiger and Damian Stöckli on the occasion of the ISV sub-association festival, because the two clearly voluntarily bowed to the Bernese guest in a duel with Fabian Staudenmann in the ground fight, which prevented the latter from getting the maximum mark. “You don’t want to see that, that’s not sporty. I’d almost be ashamed!”
“The team was put in the wrong light”
Sempach’s verdict and follow-up reporting left Wicki ugly despite his win at Dagmarsellen. “The Central Swiss team was put in a wrong light by this reporting, which irritates me enormously.”
Wicki wanted to clarify this personally with Sempach, who was born in Emmental and has been running his partner’s parental farm in Entlebuch for a few years now. And indeed, the two “bad guys” are now getting along again. This was also felt in Sempach’s comments about Wicki’s performance on the Rigi-Schwinget.
Wrong assessment against Schlegel
After the set swing against the uncrowned Thurgauer king Samuel Giger and the victories against Christian Bucher, Romain Collaud and Lars Geisser, Wicki needed a flat throw against Werner Schlegel from Eastern Switzerland to qualify for the final round. A huge job, after all, after an injury break of several weeks, the Toggenburger impressively put the bad Zuger Pirmin Reichmuth on his back in first gear. But Wicki threw Hemberg’s carpenter into the sawdust in the very first move and after a short discussion received the winning “Good” and a 10 from the judges!
Although the TV slow motion showed that the referee’s decision was wrong, the three gentlemen received support from expert Sempach: “Unlike us, the referee cannot fall back on slow motion.” The four-time Confederation from Obwalden, Benji von Ah (36), who has been working for the central Swiss broadcaster Tele 1 since his resignation, attributes the controversial decision in favor of the king to the high temperatures: “The referees are also brutally hot they have the sun on your head all day long. And that’s why we get results like this…»
Reichmuth’s second great mountain triumph
In the end, the sun shines on the Rigi, but not for Wicki – in the last round, the 1.83 meter tall man is tricked in the second move by the 1.98 meter tall Reichmuth and thus concedes the second defeat of the season after the lost final round in Oberaargauischen against Staudenmann.
Still, Wicki should be able to live well with Reichmuth’s victory. He knows that at the height of the season at the Unspunnen in Interlaken at the end of August, he will depend on Reichmuth in top form, especially in the fight against the Bernese and the Northeastern Swiss. The fact that the physiotherapist from Cham, who had to swallow four cruciate ligament tears in the past nine years, is not yet as strong as in his gala season 2019 (four Kranzfest successes, victory at the Brünig) is due to his NOS defeat against Armon Orlik two weeks ago and yesterday his diver against Schlegel. But the final victory over the reigning king should give Prince Pirmin a powerful boost.
