Wimbledon surprise bag Belinda Bencic: It was a mystery to her at what point the 26-year-old from eastern Switzerland would take part in the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. The number 14 in the world only started training on grass a few days before her first assignment. In the spring, it was a stress reaction in the thigh that sidelined her for weeks. Then, after returning to the French Open and getting out in the first round, she developed shoulder problems as well.

Now she is in the fourth round at Wimbledon, where she will challenge world number one Iga Swiatek (22). Bencic says: “I have to look at everything from a different perspective: I’m happy to be able to play at all.” In her case, however, that does not mean that she does so without having high expectations of herself. Bencic emphasizes that she loves challenges against top players because she can only win there.

In addition, she was able to raise her “confidence level” again. On the one hand thanks to her victories over Katie Swan (24), Danielle Collins (29) and Magda Linette (31). On the other hand, because her body naturally participates: “I notice that because I suddenly think about my tennis again – and then no longer study injuries.”

A kiss from the parents

Perhaps the main reason why Bencic exudes such composure is probably of a private nature. “My parents are here – they haven’t been for a long time and I’m very happy,” says the Olympic champion, who was coached by her father for a long time (and with interruptions), but then her cord was cut.

Papa Ivan and Mama Dana have boxed at every Wimbledon match to date. Always next to Belinda’s friend and fitness coach Martin Hromkovic (41) and trainer Matej Liptak (45). Only brother Brian (23) is missing “because he has to work”.

After defeating Linette, both parents kiss the cheek before going to the cloakroom – and later to the house in Aorangi Park, where they all rented accommodation together. That nest warmth gives Bencic support after a difficult spring, which was not only characterized by injuries, but also by the surprising divorce from trainer Dimitri Tursunov.

The family should now push her to the next peak performance. Surprise bag Bencic is certainly capable of winning against Swiatek on their preferred surface, but given the signs it would be a real surprise.
