Edwin van der Sar is fighting for his life.

The fear of goalkeeping legend Edwin van der Sar (52) continues. His old club Ajax Amsterdam announced on Friday that the Dutchman suffered a cerebral hemorrhage during the holiday in Croatia and had to be flown to hospital by helicopter.

On Saturday, the Dutch record champion reported on behalf of Van der Sar’s wife Annemarie with an update: “Edwin van der Sar will remain in intensive care for the time being. His condition is stable, but still worrying.”

Champions League hero of 2008

On social media, former teammates contact Van der Sar with wishes for recovery. “Ed is a fighter. All our thoughts are with his family,” writes Rio Ferdinand. They played together for many years at Manchester United.

The “Red Devils” also wish him a lot of strength. “I send you all our love and energy, Edwin.” The 52-year-old won numerous titles with ManUtd, including the Champions League in 2008. In the final, he saved the decisive penalty from Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka. Three years later, van der Sar ended his career at United.

Won everything there is to win

With Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, an old opponent also addressed the ex-keeper with uplifting words. “Tough opponents, but what a goalkeeper and what a man. Thoughts are with you. I wish you a speedy recovery, my friend,” said the Ivorian.

Van der Sar has won just about everything there is to win in his career at Manchester and Ajax. With both clubs, he lifted the handle pot. There are also several championships and cups. He was 130 times between the posts for the Dutch national team. Most recently he was general manager at Ajax. He resigned in early June after a disappointing untitled season. (mab)
