Major concern for Dutch goalkeeper legend Edwin van der Sar: The 52-year-old is in hospital after suffering a “cerebral haemorrhage in intensive care”, Van der Sar’s old club Ajax Amsterdam said on Friday. The Dutchman is “in a stable condition”, Ajax announced an “update” “as soon as there is more concrete information”.
Daily newspaper De Telegraaf reports that Van der Sar suffered a cerebral hemorrhage during a holiday in Croatia. He was flown to hospital by helicopter from “a small Croatian Mediterranean island”. There he will be treated.
Symptoms of exhaustion and fatigue
Van der Sar had recently resigned from his position as general director, as of June 1 he transferred his duties to the board. At the time, he justified this step with exhaustion and fatigue symptoms.
As a player, he enjoyed great success at Ajax and later at Manchester United, where he won the Champions League twice (1995 with Ajax and 2008 with Manchester). He played 130 international matches for the Dutch national team. This makes Van der Sar the player with the second most appearances for the Orange, only Wesley Sneijder (134) has played more games for the national team. (AFP)
