Stan Wawrinka also clears the second hurdle.

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 88) is in the 3rd round at Wimbledon for the first time in eight years. There he meets Novak Djokovic.

Wawrinka wins 6:3, 4:6, 6:4, 6:2 against the number 29 seeded Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry after an initially strong and ultimately solid performance.

In a high-level first set, Wawrinka was the only break to make it 3-1. From the middle of the second set, the 38-year-old from Vaud made a few more mistakes, also because he is no longer so flexible. Etcheverry invents set equalization. However, the Swiss is present at the important moments.

Six chances on the 3rd set

With his first break chance after 3-1 in the first set, Wawrinka made a provisional decision, even though he then needed six set balls to win the third round. This largely broke the resistance of the South American and Wawrinka played the fourth set safely at home.

At Wimbledon he reached the 3rd round for the sixth time, for the first time since the 9:11 loss in the fifth set in the quarterfinals in 2015 against Richard Gasquet. It is the first time since the 2020 French Open and his knee surgery that Wawrinka has won two straight matches in a Grand Slam tournament.

Now comes the hardest test. The Swiss will meet top favorite and defending champion Novak Djokovic on Friday. The two played against each other no less than 26 times (20-6 wins for the Serb), but never on grass. (SDA)
