They are violent images. Even ten months later it was hard to bear. As if crazy, YB defender Ulisses Garcia ground his opponent Fabian Schubert in the legs. Broken tibia and fibula.

The public favorite in St. Gallen was hospitalized for three weeks and required six surgeries. Despite the terrible injury and a long period of suffering, Schubert has no problem watching the video recordings from that time. “Maybe it’s because I scored a goal during the campaign. That makes it easier,” says the 28-year-old. He’s not afraid to get into duels. “I handled it all well.”

Because he has a stable environment. His wife Anja is his mainstay. He calls his parents, who live in Carinthia (Austria), every other day. And his best buddy Patrick Weithaler also provides support in difficult situations. “Schubi” is still the same person as at school. Ordinary. Someone who doesn’t like to be the center of attention.

As a couple even stronger than before

Then Weithaler tells a story that underlines the whole. As a witness, he organized Schubert’s bachelor party. “We blindfolded Schubi and put him on a chair. But he did not feel well at all, everything was very uncomfortable for him. He didn’t want any of that.”

What he wanted was his Anja. Weithaler, who has known Schubert for 17 years, was of course aware of this. That is why he personally asked none other than Anja to dance. “When Schubi, blindfolded, realized that his own wife was dancing, the relief went through his bones.”

The two have been a couple for twelve years. And more connected than ever. “The long injury break has made us even stronger,” says Schubert. Anja gave him strength. But the club and the fans also helped to get through the difficult situation. “It’s incredible how much encouragement I’ve received and I’m infinitely grateful for that.”

“He’s Not a Speaker”

In the middle of rehabilitation, the FCSG extended Schubert’s contract until June 2024. A gesture that the attacking player is eager to repay with good performances in the coming season. Before his serious injury, the striker played behind the strikers in attacking midfield. A position that suits the man of 1.94 meters. But Schubert would never make any claims. He is too modest for that.

“He is not a speaker and is therefore often underestimated,” says his adviser Max Hagmayr. He once discovered his protégé at the VST Völkermarkt in the third highest Austrian league. And even then, he had no doubt that Schubert would one day become a professional. “Because he scores goals. With the left, with the right, with the head.”

And even if a YB defender jumps in his legs.
