Yanick Brecher has long been an icon in Zurich. How important he is for the FCZ is evident from the times he is deployed.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the strongest youth team in the country? In general, this question is not easy to answer. The goals and strategies of the clubs are too different for that. The factor “minutes of use of home-grown products” nevertheless makes it possible to compare them. Homegrown players are players who have played for the current club for at least one year before making their professional debut.

FC Zürich’s homegrown players clearly collected the most playing time in the last Super League season. Ten players have a total of 12,444 minutes. Servette follows in second place with 11,656 minutes, although fifteen former juniors have been used.

FCL and YB slightly behind the top duo

The fact that FCZ is still at the top of this ranking is because with Yanick Brecher, Lindrit Kamberi, Bledian Krasniqi, Becir Omeragic, Blerim Dzemaili and Mirlind Kryeziu, six each play more than 1000 minutes. At Servette it is one less.

FC Luzern (9825) and YB (8320) cannot quite keep up with the top duo. The central Swiss fielded just as many homegrown players as Servette last season. But with Ardon Jashari, Marco Burch and Dejan Sorgic, only three kickers have gotten more than 1000 minutes of playing time. The rest are young additional players. Goalkeeper Pascal Loretz and Severin Ottiger will probably play a much more important role next season.

With the master, there are only five homegrown talents that have been used. They have all collected more than 1000 playing minutes for this. It is quite possible that in the new season, with Joel Bichsel and Théo Golliard, coming from the U21, there will be two players again who fall into the 0 to 1000 minutes category.

Descent FC Basel

FC Basel (3299) is in completely different spheres. Only Lugano (1848) and Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy (0) leave the Bebbi behind. The difference with ten years ago is striking. In the 2012/13 season, the players trained at FCB still played around 13,000 minutes.

Today it is just over 3000 minutes collected by Taulant Xhaka, Fabian Frei and Mirko Salvi. This statistic symbolizes the FCB identity that has been lost over the years.
