She is at the place of her dreams: Simona Waltert (22) may play her first main round match at Wimbledon on Monday. The Czech Marie Bouzkova (24, WTA 32) is waiting for the start.
It is the reward for her good development: four weeks ago she made the jump to the Grand Slam main draw via the qualifying tournament at the French Open – for the very first time in her career. Now the world number 115 has repeated the feat in London. “Paris gave me a boost,” says Waltert, “so I knew I could do it.”
Wimbledon is even more special for her. She has good memories of the grass tournament – in 2017 she reached the semi-finals here as a junior. And: the resident of Chur bought a mobile phone case on which the impressive facility is depicted as a souvenir. This still graces the smartphone six years later. Now the shell should bring her luck on a female level.
Waltert: “Being in Wimbledon is just a completely different feeling – with this history, this tradition, with this perfect lawn. But what I especially like is that they have managed to give the facility a modern touch.”
