253 sets of medals have been awarded in the last twelve days at the still young multi-sport event. Switzerland received five gold and five silver medals, plus ten bronze medals. In total, the Swiss delegation took home 20 medals.
For comparison: in Belarus in 2019, Switzerland won ten prizes (three of them in gold), in 2015 in Baku at the premiere of the continental competition 15 (seven gold).
The fact that the 20 places in the top 3 were spread over 13 different sports enabled Ralph Stöckli, Swiss Olympic’s Chef de Mission, to draw a thoroughly positive balance. The team of about 120 “painted a great picture of Swiss sport and made a strong impression,” said the man from eastern Switzerland.
Christian wins gold three times
From a Swiss point of view, the high flyer in Poland was 29-year-old Nina Christen from Nidwalden. The Olympic champion was involved in all four marksman medals with three gold medals and one silver medal. Christen also secured a quota place for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. There was also one for Switzerland in the modern pentathlon.
The other gold medals besides the marksmen were won by the water jumper Michelle Heimberg and the national beach soccer team. The victories and podiums of the track and field athletes, who also held the European Team Championships in Chorzow, Poland, were not counted in the balance of these European Games.
The next European Games are scheduled for 2027. Where this will take place is not yet known. (SDA/mab)
