British professional cyclist Adam Yates (30) of UAE Team Emirates wins the first stage of the 110th Tour de France. After a tricky 182km start and finish in Bilbao, fellow favorite Tadej Pogacar’s (24) teammate won four seconds ahead of his twin brother Simon (30) of Team Jayco Alula to secure the overall leader’s famous yellow jersey rankings .
The duo pulled away from the few remaining competitors with some 9km to go on the descent of the Côte de Pike, the final climb of the day. For Adam Yates, winner of the Tour de Romandie at the end of April, it is the first stage victory in a grand tour.
Fastest in the sprint of the first chasing group at twelve seconds behind is fellow favorite Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian, overall winner of the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021, secures a four-second bonus. Last year’s Danish winner Jonas Vingegaard (26) reaches the finish after 182km, as do Tour de Suisse winner Mattias Skjelmose (22) and Wout van Aert (28) in the same group as Pogacar.
Swiss hopeless
Silvan Dillier (32), together with Stefan Küng (29), the only Swiss driver in this year’s Tour de France, can be seen at the front of the field for many kilometers on the first day. De Aargauer did follow-up work for his Alpecin teammate Mathieu van der Poel (28).
But the Dutchman has to settle for 37th place in Bilbao after 182 very hilly kilometers. Küng reaches Bilbao in 100th place, more than eleven minutes behind the leaders. Dillier (154th), who was actively recovering after work for the remaining kilometers, crosses the finish line almost 17 minutes behind the winner.
The 2nd stage on Sunday, which also runs over 208.9 km from Vitoria-Gasteiz to San Sebastian in the Spanish Basque Country, should also be a matter for the strong classics specialists. Just like the day before, five mountain classifications have to be completed. The last climb, the Jaizkibel, at more than 16 km from the finish, is known to the drivers of the one-day race Clasica San Sebastian. (SDA/AFP)
