Yuri (born 2018) and Kenzo (2021) are still too young to predict whether they will become athletic stars. But they certainly have the genes for it, because their mother Nia Ali (34) is world champion in the 100 meters hurdles and their father Andre De Grasse (28) Olympic champion in the 200 meters. This definitely makes them the fastest parents in the world.

Both the American and the Canadian will participate in the Athletissima in Lausanne. The fact that the couple appears in Switzerland on the same evening is nothing new to them. Last year both competed in Weltklasse Zurich and at the Gala dei Castelli in Bellinzona. At that time, in Ticino, they took the opportunity to see the imposing Castelgrande.

“Being a mother also helps me as an athlete”

In addition to the two children with De Grasse, Ali also has an older son named Titus. This stems from a previous relationship with track and field athlete Michael Tinsley. For the mother of three, the double burden of work and family is not a curse, but a blessing. “Being a mother also helps me as an athlete,” she told American media in 2022. “I have to arrange a lot at once. This helps me organize my training better and more efficiently.”

The two little ones do not yet realize how successful their parents are. Ali: “You don’t know what I’m doing. They think it’s all just fun and games. When I run with them, they always say, ‘You’re not that fast. We’ll dry you off.'”

Mujinga Kambundji (31) is also impressed that Ali, as a mother of three children, can still keep up with the top. “Once you have friends and sisters around you who have children, it becomes even clearer what pregnancy does to the body. You can understand even more clearly how wonderful it is to come back to the world level after pregnancy. And I feel that women outside the sport see it that way and get inspired by it.”

Her dream: On the victory lap with the youngest

Ali hopes she can continue her cherished tradition for years to come. After victories, she likes to go on a lap of honor with the kids. When she won Olympic silver in Rio in 2016, she celebrated on the tartan track with son Titus. And when she became world champion in Doha in 2019, she celebrated it together with Titus and Yuri. “I want to be on the podium again at a big event so that Kenzo can also experience such a moment. I will do my best for that.”
