“Emotions sometimes bring out the best in me – and yes, sometimes the worst. I wasn’t always in control, I did wrong out of frustration. But I am human and you can’t always control people.” Chris DiDomenico (34) writes these words in the SC Bern fan magazine “Spirit”.
After just one season, the Canadian and the Mutzen terminated the contract prematurely. DiDomenico is back in attack for HC Fribourg-Gottéron in 2023/24. Now the seductive figure of the National League takes time to reflect on the past few months in the federal city.
Strong in focus
“When you are regarded as one of the biggest clubs in Europe, you get the attention you deserve. Yes, there is a lot going on in and around the SCB. But I never saw that as a negative. But I felt it as far as I was more in focus than at any other club. Do I have this situation and does the high attention always act correctly? No,” DiDomenico writes in his letter.
Teammates became annoyed
In terms of points, he delivered. 23 goals and 30 assists in qualifying, no teammate could hold a candle to him. There were two goals and six assists in the knockout phase (SCB failed in the quarter-finals of the playoffs against eventual finalist Biel). But he didn’t just make friends in Bern. Some teammates were annoyed with him. He was so insolent and extended his broadcast time on his own initiative. He was also suspended three times, twice for a swallow.
Looking back, DiDomenico said, “A few fewer suspensions, that would have been helpful for sure. Incidentally, I did not always agree with the many buses, and I proposed marriage to my girlfriend: I can tell you, it was an expensive few weeks and months in Bern.” (yup)
