“Embarrassing first, then outrageous”: German and Italian stars are torn apart for U21 debacle

Germany’s U21s are out of the European Championship (Nelson Weiper in the photo).

The Swiss national team U21 qualified for the quarter-finals of the European Championship with a lot of stupidity and Norwegian support. Other nations were less fortunate. The hangover is particularly large in two of our neighboring countries.

In Germany, men’s football is in a real crisis. After the good results in the national senior team have not been forthcoming for months, the U21s have now also reached an all-time low. And the serve was difficult: last in their group, the national junior team was eliminated without a word – with one point from three games in a group with England, Israel and the Czech Republic. In the last group match against England, the DFB team had no chance. After 21 minutes the English were 2-0 ahead and that also meant the end result.

Afterwards, the players and the association are literally torn from all sides. Blick has listed the reactions of some German media:

First embarrassing, then rude

In addition to the press, the fans are also extremely disappointed. During the final phase, insulting songs and whistles sounded and the fans sang “Scheisse, Scheisse DFB”, among other things. They also shouted things like “We’re fed up, you can go home!”.

Many experts are also publicly hacking on the association and the team. Markus Babbel says on Sat1: “The group was manageable, leaving last means you did something wrong. It’s very disappointing.”

Kicker reporter Tim Lüddecke went even further, warning that “German football must be careful not to sink into mediocrity”. Apologies about the absence of players like Karim Adeyemi or Ansgar Knauff don’t help either.

Italy is already out

In the Swiss group, one of the favourites, Italy, has already been eliminated. Our southern neighbor performed with one of the best proclaimed squads and failed decisively. The stars around Sandro Tonali and Wilfried Gnonto could not show their class in their matches or lost track after a certain time, as against Switzerland. They were also more concerned with the referee’s performance than their own, which certainly cost them unnecessary energy.

The negative response is also great in the Italian media. The “Gazzetta dello Sport” headlines “Italy, a disaster” and harshly criticizes the Azzurrini’s performance. Especially the last game against Norway (0-1) will remain a painful memory, especially Nicolò Cambiaghi’s slapstick shot over the bar.

For Switzerland, the debacle in Italy meant qualification for the quarterfinals, on Saturday (live on the ticker from 9 p.m.) the Swiss will meet the juniors of Spain. The Hispanics won their group with ease, but showed isolated weaknesses in the last game against Ukraine. Let’s hope Patrick Framework can align his team to this and lead them to Olympic qualification. (nsa)
