Switzerland is in the quarter-finals of the European U21 Championship. And this despite the 1:4 defeat against France.

Defeat could hardly be sweeter. Although the U21 national team lost 4-1 against France, they still finished in the quarter-finals. Norway beats the Italians 1-0 at the same time. That’s what the Swiss say after the game against SRF.

1-1 goalscorer Dan Ndoye

“It’s a special way we qualified. But we’re happy to take that over. It’s somehow deserved that we continue like this after the performances against Italy and Norway. We held on well until we were 1-1 and that gives us confidence for the quarter-final against Spain, but we have to be careful to correct the mistakes that always lead to goals.”

Trainer Patrick Frame

“We are overjoyed. The key is that we came back against Italy. Without the 2:3 it would have been difficult. Maybe a bit of luck, but still deserved. We performed until France made it 2-1. The Norwegians have shown that it is difficult to beat them. Of course everything fell into place, we know that. We kind of broke down at the end and it was brutal. That got on our nerves a bit. Now we are happy, we made it. We have left a great country behind. Tomorrow no one will ask how it happened.”

Defender Aurèle Amenda

“We were very good in the game until 1:2. Then we slacked off, we weren’t that good together anymore. But in the end we made it in a very difficult group. We didn’t start well against Italy, it was different today. Although after the 1-2 we took it easy. We are all very proud, but still a little disappointed. A mix of emotions, finding words is not so easy at the moment.”
