A photo that has become rare: Jil Teichmann in a jubilant pose.

Jil Teichmann (WTA 129) triumphed in the first round of the grass tournament in Bad Homburg with 3:6, 6:3, 6:4 against the American Claire Liu (WTA 95). For the native of Biel, it is a rare sense of achievement this season.

Since her second-round success against Belinda Bencic in Indian Wells in mid-March, it is only Teichmann’s second win at the WTA level. Since then, the 25-year-old left-hander has failed at the starting obstacle in six of the seven tournaments. The bear market recently dropped Teichmann out of the top 100 of the world rankings. Just under a year ago, she was number 21.

In the next round, Teichmann could face world number one Iga Swiatek in Bad Homburg. For this, the two-time French Open winner from Poland must beat the local Tatjana Maria (ATP 58) in the first round. (SDA/dti)
