Lionel Spitz, Giulia Senn, Ricky Petrucciani (pictured) and Julia Niederberger set a Swiss record.

The third day of competition was a nerve-wracking match for the Swiss team. Because there were various disciplines on the program in which Switzerland had estimated relatively few leading positions, the 30-point lead over the relegation places after two days was of great importance. In the end, the 42-man Swiss Athletics team had a reserve of 13 points in 14th place, managed to stay in the league and will be among the top 16 countries in Europe at the next European team championships in Madrid in two years’ time .

The 4x400m mixed relay with Lionel Spitz (Adliswil Track Team), Giulia Senn (LC Zurich), Ricky Petrucciani (LC Zurich) and Julia Niederberger (LA Nidwalden) ensured the exciting finish of the European Championships 8th overall and thus definitively put the Swiss secure place in the 1st division. The quartet also set a Swiss record of 3:14.22 minutes.

After a total of 37 decisions, Italy secured victory with 426.5 points. Belgium, Turkey and Norway were relegated to the 2nd division. (SDA)
