Xhaka, Sommer, Jashari: transfer vortex on these three Swiss national players

Yann Sommer faces a groundbreaking year. Will he leave Bayern again?

Yann Sommer (34) and Granit Xhaka (30) are on vacation after the national team’s matches against Andorra (2:1) and Romania (2:2). The pre-season preparations will start for them at Bayern Munich and Arsenal in mid-July. It is unclear if the two are still under contract with these clubs. In addition to Sommer and Xhaka, another player from Nati is at the center of a top club. All three have new developments.

Where is Yann Sommer going?

It seems clear that Manuel Neuer (37) will return as number one in goal at Bayern Munich next season. Club and trainer Thomas Tuchel (49) have made telling comments about the comeback in the past. In addition, new friend and ex-goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic (42) is about to return to Säbenerstrasse six months after his out under Nagelsmann.

No wonder Yann Sommer has to think about his future (contract until 2025). The “image” brings a new interested party into play: VfB Stuttgart is considering signing our national goalkeeper. Stuttgart? At first glance, that sounds like a blatant relegation, as the Swabians only secured relegation against HSV last season. On reflection, a change would make sense. Sommer knows the Bundesliga through and through, would be a regular keeper and could gain match training for the EM 2024. He needs that in order not to lose his permanent place in the national goal to BVB goalie Gregor Kobel (25). Incidentally, Kobel himself played for Stuttgart before moving to Dortmund in 2021.

Portuguese want national talent

The interest of many Bundesliga clubs and FC Porto in Ardon Jashari (20) is known, and now champion Benfica is also interested. According to “A Bola”, the Portuguese league king has been keeping an eye on FC Luzern’s national talent for several months – and has even made a first attempt to weigh up the interests of the national player.

Benfica is regarded as a talent factory and has already developed many players excellently. Including the Argentinian world champions Angel Di Maria and Enzo Fernandez or the Portuguese trio Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva (both ManCity) or Joao Felix (Chelsea). A transfer from Jashari this summer is considered likely. For the time being, the Luzerner (contract until 2026, market value almost CHF 7.5 million) is focusing on the U21 national team, which will meet Italy in the second group game at the European Championship on Sunday (6 p.m., watch the live ticker).

When will the Xhaka deal be completed?

Granit Xhaka’s move from Arsenal to Bayer Leverkusen was clear weeks ago. So far there is no confirmation. The deal is currently on hold as everyone involved awaits the green light from Arsenal, who are still at the club. The Gunners need a replacement for the Swiss and have opted for Declan Rice (24) from West Ham. But: the deal between the 24-year-old and Arsenal could burst. The reason for this is giant Manchester City, who snatched the championship from Xhaka and Co. last season.

Trainer Pep Guardiola wants another midfielder in addition to Mateo Kovacic after the departure of Ilkay Gündogan (to Barcelona) and could have found him in Rice. Jack Grealish (27), who already plays at Manchester, has already said as part of the national team’s move that he is working on a deal for his “best friend” Rice and is confident it will work. (par)
