The Spaniard joins a team that is last in the MLS Eastern Conference
Spain’s Sergio Busquets will join Argentina’s Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, the MLS club announced on Friday.
After months of rumours, Inter Miami released a video on Friday announcing the signing of Busquets and featuring quotes from soccer stars such as Pep Guardiola and Luka Modric praising Messi’s former Barcelona team-mate.
After fifteen seasons in which he won 32 titles (9 Leagues, 7 Copa del Rey, 7 Spanish Super Cups, 3 Champions Leagues, 3 World Club Championships and 3 European Super Cups), the 34-year-old Busquets recently announced that he will leave Barcelona.
Busquets was not only an anchor in the midfield of the Barca club, but also marked an era in the Spanish team with which he won the World Cup in 2010 and the Eurocup in 2012.
The midfielder, who developed his entire professional career in Barcelona, will debut abroad in the MLS in the hands of Messi, with whom he shared numerous triumphs in the Blaugrana jersey.
These two important reinforcements, which will be able to be signed in the MLS summer transfer window that starts on July 5, will come in handy for Inter from Miami, who are in dire need of help because they are currently last in the Eastern Conference with only 15 points from 17 games.
The Miami Herald newspaper, citing a source close to the negotiations, assures that Busquets will occupy one of the three positions of “designated players” at Inter Miami.
The “designated player” figure, created by MLS in 2007 so it could bring David Beckham to the LA Galaxy, allows teams to work around salary caps to deal with certain rush signings.
Busquets, who has also had offers from Saudi Arabia for his future in football outside of Barcelona, could have another former partner at Inter Miami in addition to Messi, as the Florida team has also been rumored as a possible destination for Jordi Alba in recent days.
