It was shocking images that went around the world at the EM 2021. The Danish star Christian Eriksen (31) collapsed on the field and had to be resuscitated for minutes, everyone feared the worst. After a long wait it was all-clear, the Danish midfielder barely survived and is now living with an implanted defibrillator.
The photos were so bad for Eriksen’s ex-Ajax teammate Daley Blind (33) that he seriously considered not playing the Dutch opener the next day. “It was a huge step mentally, I thought about it very carefully,” says the Dutchman in a podcast. Because the Bayern defender – contract expires at the end of June – has been playing with an implanted defibrillator for several years.
Heart attack in the game – short treatment and on we go
Blind’s implantation of the device was a result of him suffering from myocarditis in 2019. According to the former ManUnited player, he suffered a minor heart attack due to this inflammation in the Champions League match on December 10, 2019 against Valencia CF. “I became dizzy and had to be treated,” says Blind. “After the treatment, I just continued to play.”
Normally you lose consciousness after a heart attack, but the Holland star’s heart somehow managed to get the rhythm back under control.
In the European Championship match against Ukraine (3:2), Blind was used for 64 minutes and cried when he was substituted. In the later interview, he said that the events surrounding Eriksen had hit him hard, “not just because he’s a friend, but because I know the same issues”. (nsa)
