Hope for justice for the relatives of Davide Rebellin († 51). Thanks to a surveillance video, the truck driver who fatally injured the recently resigned professional cyclist in Italy was convicted.
According to Hamm’s Public Prosecution Service, the German has surrendered to the authorities and is in custody. Now the German judiciary must decide whether the driver will be extradited to Italy. There he faces a lawsuit and probably also a conviction for hit and run, murder on the road and failure to provide assistance.
According to the Italian prosecutor, the video shows the 67-year-old getting out of his vehicle after the accident, approaching Rebellin, turning around, getting back into the truck and driving away.
Ardennes triple and doping case
Davide Rebellin was the first professional cyclist to achieve the Ardennes Triple in 2004 – winning the Amstel Gold Race, Walloon Arrow and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. In total, he stood on the top step of the podium more than 60 times. But his career also had dark moments, for example when he was stripped of Olympic silver in 2008 for doping.
The Italian had announced his retirement from professional cycling just three days before his fatal accident. (nsa)
