Bickering over the contract: New Jersey wants to go to arbitration with Timo Meier

For Timo Meier, the regulation of his future awaits.

Timo Meier’s four-year contract with the San Jose Sharks for $24 million expires June 30. Following the trade to New Jersey in February, the Devils own and retain the rights to the striker, and as of July 1, he is a “Restricted Free Agent.” New Jersey General Manager Tom Fitzgerald, 54, told nhl.com last week that Meier wanted to keep Meier with the organization for the long haul.

But so far no agreement has been reached in the contract negotiations. The final year of the expiring contract netted the Appenzeller $10 million. And he and his agent now probably want a salary in this area as well. The Devils, on the other hand, would like to pay him a lower salary, probably somewhere between $7 million and $8 million.

In 2024, Meier was free to choose

Elliotte Friedman of the sports channel Sportsnet has now explained on Twitter that New Jersey is filing an application to go to the wage arbitration court. He would then have to determine a binding salary for a one-year contract, with a margin between 8.5 and 10 million dollars.

In the summer of 2024, Meier would then be an “unrestricted free agent” and be able to choose his team freely. But what is often the case in such situations probably also happens: before the appointment at the arbitral tribunal, the parties agree on a multi-year contract that suits both parties. And according to a tweet from Devils reporter Amanda Stein on Friday afternoon, that may well be the case eventually. She writes about an 8-year contract that Meier wants to find and negotiate with the Devils. (just now)
