Céline Naef survives the first round in the Netherlands.

Céline Naef (WTA 202) makes a Swiss exclamation mark in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. In the first round, the Schwyz native defeated Venus Williams, a player with a great past. For Naef, who celebrates her 18th birthday on June 25, it is the second victory in a main draw on the WTA Tour. In mid-May in Florence, Italy, she won after qualifying in the first round against Katrina Scott of the USA.

Naef, who received a wild card in the Netherlands, put on a real series of improvement and won after more than two and a quarter minutes against the seven-time Grand Slam winner Williams 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 3), 6: 2. Naef : «Simply incredible. I can’t believe I had the chance to play Venus. She is a role model for everyone.”

Williams’ first game since January

The 42-year-old American made her comeback in ‘s-Hertogenbosch under the eyes of her younger and even more successful sister Serena Williams (23 major titles). Most recently, the five-time Wimbledon winner, currently number 696 in the world, came into action in Auckland (New Zealand) in early January.

In the round of 16, Naef, who took less than a year to move up almost 600 places in the world rankings, meets Caty McNally. As number 62 in the ranking, the four-year-older American is 140 positions better than the Swiss.

Bandecchi disabled

In ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Susan Bandecchi, the second Swiss in the main draw, missed the passage to the next round. The 24-year-old from Ticino (WTA 388) lost after qualifying to the Slovak Viktoria Hruncakova (WTA 144) 4: 6, 2: 6 in just over an hour and a half.

Bandecchi is still waiting for her second win in a main field of the WTA tour. Her only success so far was a year ago in Lausanne against the then top 100 player Océane Dodin. (SDA/yap)
