Alex Frei becomes a coach at FC Aarau.

What has already become clear is now certain: As Blick announced two weeks ago, Alex Frei will be in the trainer’s chair at FC Aarau from next season.

As the Challenge League club announced on Monday afternoon, Alex Frei (43) has signed a two-year contract. He succeeds Boris Smiljanic (46), who left the club in the summer after seven months in office.

It is Alex Frei’s fourth post as head coach. The record scorer of the Swiss national team was already on the coaching chair with Wil, Winterthur and Basel. He led Winterthur back to the Super League for the first time since 1985, he was fired from FCB four months ago.

With Frei’s commitment, Aarau wants to give more weight to the training of young players and to remain an “ambitious club” in the Challenge League. In the last season they missed third place in the table and the corresponding barrage by three points. (byl)
