In Italy everyone has known it for a long time: Simone Inzaghi (47) is the king of the cup competitions. Our southern neighbors call it “Uomo di Coppa”. The younger brother of Pippo Inzaghi (49) – who now works as a coach at Reggina in Serie B in Calabria – knows better than anyone how to hire a team in a knockout phase.

Inzaghi has played 32 cup games since joining Inter. Twenty in the Champions League. Ten in the Coppa Italia. Two in the Supercoppa. His point average is an impressive 2.15 points per game. The Milanese lost only five games – but always in the royal class. Twice against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid and once against Liverpool.

The eighth trophy follows?

Inzaghi’s record is even better when it comes to finals. He has now won seven finals in a row. Three times with Lazio and four times with Inter. The last two weeks ago against Fiorentina. His experience with all-important games began with disappointment. Six years ago he had to admit defeat with Lazio in the Italian Cup against Juventus.

Since then, Inzaghi has been unstoppable. Now he can also show in Europe that he is a real finals specialist. For the first time he is in a European final. His opponent Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, is a long-time veteran of such matches. It is already his fourth Champions League final for the Spaniard.

Should Inzaghi actually take the pot against Manchester City, he would join a certain Jose Mourinho in the list of most successful Inter coaches. At the same time, it would mean his definitive breakthrough on the European stage. For a long time he was only considered Pippo’s little brother. That would be the end once and for all.
