It was two months to forget for Belinda Bencic (26). First there was the divorce from coach Dimitri Tursunow (40), with whom she won two tournaments at the beginning of this year, but with whom “sudden differences of a human and sporting nature” appeared. Then the stress response kicked in her thighs, and she couldn’t play tennis for five weeks. And finally the sensational starting loss against the Russian outsider Elina Avanesyan (20/WTA 134).

After the promising start to the season with the titles in Adelaide and Abu Dhabi, the unfortunate crash followed. After all: at the comeback in Paris, the number twelve in the world was able to appear without pain (“my leg survived”). On the other hand, she could not hide the lack of competition training on the Paris sands.

Bencic hoped that there was at least something good about her departure from Roland Garros: “It was that one game after the return where everything went wrong. I know it didn’t look good. It’s frustrating that I’ve been delayed this year. ” The Olympic champion emphasized that she was still far from her best level. Paris is part of a new beginning.

‘s-Hertogenbosch and Berlin are waiting

The next chapter follows in the Netherlands – at the WTA grass tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (starting Monday). So on a different basis. And with her new coach Matej Liptak (45), who was by her side at the French Open for only a few days.

The Slovak Fedcup captain is still there as part of a test phase. Bencic wants to give the collaboration a fair chance. And the goal is clear: Liptak must have Bencic running at full speed again in the coming weeks – after ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Berlin is in any case also on the program. The East Swiss says: “At Wimbledon (from July 3, ed.) I want to be in top shape again.”
