Jean-Paul Brigger, where did you follow the relegation of FC Sions?
Jean Paul Brigger: We are currently touring Northern Europe with the camper. I’ve only seen the summary of the game. But that was enough for me.

Do you have enough distance or does it hurt?
Of course it hurts, but I’m sorry: Sion deserved relegation. First you are last, although you have the significantly stronger individual players compared to Winterthur. Then you can still go to the jump-off because of the competition increase and lose both matches against the third party in the Challenge League. That says it all. But it didn’t come out of the blue that it would turn out that way. Many mistakes have been made.

Name the biggest mistake?
The signing of Mario Balotelli was a complete blunder. And I’m not talking about his athletic achievements, but mainly about his looks. His manner was bad for the image of the club and a bad role model for all boys. I then played together with the former Argentinian world champions Calderon and Clausen at Sion. What role models they were! Always ahead, always fighting. If I compare them to Balotelli, your stomach will turn.

With Tramezzani, Celestini and Bettoni, three coaches lined the sidelines…
…it can’t work like that! One plays defensively, relies on it. The other wants to attack and relegate the former captain to the bench. And in between, Christian Constantin also added his two cents. A Pep Guardiola would also fail there. In addition, you still give some players an alibi for their poor performance and rob some of their trust.

Who are you thinking of?
For example, to Gaetan Karlen, who had the opening goal on the foot. I’m sure: if Karlen had been allowed to play more before that, he would have scored. But he lacked confidence. Or Lavanchy. At Lugano he was a top defender with a lot of forwards. He never got to this level with Zion. This team lacks the spirit, the cohesion. They are good individual players, but not a team.

And what gives you hope that things are getting better now?
It can’t get any worse. I now hope for a new start. You have to give young players from the region a chance. Fans also come to the Tourbillon in the Challenge League as they see a team fighting for every metre. It will continue, I’m sure. Wallis likes football.
