Former Latvian international Gints Freimanis dies from cancer at the age of 38.

It is a shock diagnosis that Gints Freimanis will receive in October 2021: stage 4 skin cancer. The doctors find metastases in the liver, lungs and kidneys. At the moment, the Latvian is 36 years old.

Surgery and chemo are going well. Until metastases are found in the brain in January. Freimanis passed away on Monday at the age of 38 from complications of the disease.

As a footballer, the midfielder spent his career in the Latvian league, with the exception of a short trip to Ireland. There he won the cup once with FK Ventspils and three times with Jelgava. Freimanis played 13 games for the Latvian national team, winning the Baltic Cup in 2014 and 2016. In 2017, he played with the national team in the World Cup qualifier against Switzerland. The Swiss then won the first and second leg.

Even after Freimanis stepped down in 2019, he remained faithful to the sport. Until his death he worked as a team leader at the second division club Leevon Saldus.
