Play-offs have now been played twice in women’s football. Winner both times? The FCZ. Two playoffs, two championship titles – not a bad record for FCZ president Ancillo Canepa, who successfully prevented the introduction of men’s playoffs. But he remains a playoff opponent, Canepa assures in the St. Gallen Kybunpark, where Zurich beats the qualifier Servette, just like in 2022.

Canepa: “The president of Servette was extreme for the playoffs, but a few months ago he complained that the women had the most points and were not champions.” The Zurich boss cannot help but smile that Servette, as clearly the best team of the season, will run into FCZ again in the final.

Mehmedi as Dzemaili replacement?

There are no men’s play-offs, but a 12-man competition with the Scottish mode. It will be the first season of the post-Dzemaili era. How do you want to replace the retired club legend? “I don’t see a problem there,” says Canepa, “you don’t win a game alone. But of course we are looking for new players who not only have leadership in football, but also in character.”

Ex-FCZ striker Admir Mehmedi (32) would be one of them. Canepa remains vague: “There are many possibilities.” In any case, the Zurich president also keeps an eye on the transfer market in England. Not because of a newcomer, but because of ex-Zurich Willy Gnonto (19).

When the Italo youngster leaves Leeds, the box office rings again in Zurich after he has already collected around 4.5 million euros. “I’m sure Willy wants to keep playing in the Premier League. That has some turnover potential. I’ve always said the transfer meets our expectations,” Canepa noted. “The first part was cash. The second part is quite important in a further transfer.”

Is this FCZ participation exceptionally high in percentage terms? Canepa: “Yes!”
