Thousands of addicts in Switzerland had a problem at the beginning of this year. Swissmedic, the Swiss drug approval and control authority, had revoked the license of the largest manufacturer of methadone tablets, Amino AG. Many former heroin addicts suddenly had no alternative.
Experts feared that those affected could relapse into illegal addiction and would have to search for the substance on the streets as in the past. In Switzerland, about 9,000 people regularly consume methadone. It serves as a substitute for heroin or other opioids. The controlled release of methadone means that addicts do not have to consume black market drugs and can lead fairly regular lives.
Company can produce again
Now experts and addicts can breathe again. The defects at the company in question have been resolved, they can produce methadone again, SRF reports on Friday. The company has again obtained the operating license for the production of methadone tablets, SRF quotes from a Swissmedic newsletter. It is said that the company has taken precautions to ensure correct production.
Production of the tablets will resume in the coming weeks. Amino AG is quoted on SRF that the machines that have been standing still for a long time must first be made operational again.
Order quantities are already high again
According to the owner of the company, there are already many orders. Amino AG has been allowed to sell tablets produced since March. At that point, Swissmedic had lifted the sales ban.
The methadone bottleneck had already been averted in February. A pharmaceutical company specializing in less potent methadone drugs began producing methadone capsules in collaboration with a pharmacy. However, the individual production involved a huge effort that should no longer be necessary. (Okay)
