Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter has set up a group of experts to investigate the role of banks in Switzerland. (picture icon)

In view of the stability of the Swiss financial center, the group will present strategic considerations on the role of banks and the state framework, as stated in the statement of the Federal Council. The results should be available at the Federal Public Service Finance (FDF) by mid-August this year.

The group will be led by former SNB Bank Council Chairman and former National Councilor Jean Studer. Also members are Eva Jaisli (head of PB Swisstools and board member of Swissmem), the professors of economics and finance Beatrice Weder di Mauro (former board member of UBS), Mirjam Eggen, Eva Hüpkes, Yvan Lengwiler and Hans Gersbach as well as the partner of the Pictet- group, Renaud de Planta.

The expert group should also involve other experts and be able to set their own priorities. In doing so, it must take into account the investigations of parliamentary supervision.

The group’s appointment is part of the Federal Council’s plan to process the CS acquisition by UBS and review “too big to fail” rules. The next report on this should be available early April 2024.
