The governments of the cantons of Bern and Jura, mediated by the federal government, settled on Tuesday the last outstanding issues related to the change of canton of Moutier BE. It concerned payments from the financial settlement between the federal government and the cantons.
Because the financial equalization only takes effect with a delay of six years, the canton of Bern de Jura pays a total of 76 million francs as compensation in the first six years.
Change of canton on January 1, 2026
Some of the particularly affected actors now have until August 18, 2023 to comment on the draft concordat. This is a committee of each of the two cantonal parliaments, the Bern-Jura council, the municipality of Moutier, the parishes of the state churches and the civil community of Moutier.
The document is then corrected by the two cantonal governments and submitted to the respective parliaments. In the autumn of 2024, the voters of the two cantons must decide on this. The transfer of the city of Moutier to the canton of Jura is scheduled for January 1, 2026.
The voters had decided
Voters in the municipality of Moutier decided in a referendum on March 28, 2021 to move to the canton of Jura. This vote also means the end of the Jura question, or so it was said at the time. In this regard, the canton of Jura has yet to remove articles 138 and 139 from its constitution. This states that the canton may expand its territory with the Bernese Jura. (SDA/lha)
