Traffic builds up on the Gotthard, especially on holiday weekends.

Canton Uri has had enough of the Gotthard traffic jam. In April, the district administrator therefore approved a professional initiative with which he protested to the federal government. This should ensure that the canton of Uri is less burdened by Gotthard traffic. For example, the district administrator advocates a booking system for passages through the Gotthard.

Uri’s lawsuit is justified: from 2012 to 2022, the volume of traffic caused by the Gotthard tunnel has increased by more than twelve percent.

The number of files has tripled

And even worse: the number of hours of traffic jam on the Uri highway has tripled to more than 1800, CH Media writes based on figures from the Federal Road Agency (Astra) and the Viasuisse traffic service. In 2012 that was less than 600 hours.

The number of traffic jam hours from January to April was higher than ever in the previous five years. All in all, traffic jam hours in the first four months of this year amounted to 340. That is more than double the number of the first four months of 2018.

Traffic jams during holidays

Last year, an average of only 19,000 vehicles per day passed through the Alpine tunnel. Much less than on other motorway routes in Switzerland. But the Gotthard tunnel, which only has one lane in each direction, is a bottleneck, especially on public holidays or weekends.

Then when many vacationers and vacationers are drawn to the south. The long weekends around Ascension Day (May 18), Pentecost (May 27 to 29) and Corpus Christi (June 8) are particularly at risk, according to Astra.

It is now up to the federal government of Bern to decide whether Uri’s cry for help will be heard and act accordingly. (rus/SDA)
