Cyber attacks are on everyone’s lips. However, this one has a happy ending. (picture icon)

The young entrepreneur Philipp Brügger (21) was actually just looking for a template for a flyer more than two years ago. “I accidentally found a sharing point, that is, a public folder for data exchange,” says Brügger. At that moment he is amazed – the folder is not encrypted and contains some sensitive documents.

One of them – a training file for the administrators of the party website of the FDP. This also includes the access data for a test website for the Freisinnige. Out of sheer curiosity, Brügger – who also studies business informatics – tries to log in to the party’s official website with the details. Successful!

Countless thoughts immediately go through the head of the young entrepreneur. What kind of jokes could you make there. From demanding fake membership fees, to publishing politically questionable content, to the idea of publishing yourself as the new federal councilor on the site – the chances of mischief would be enormous.

But despite his young age, Brügger refrains from such nonsense and instead does the only right thing: he immediately informs the General Secretariat of the Liberal Party and draws their attention to the unwanted gate.

The FDP reacted with mixed feelings. “Although they thanked me, it was made clear to me that this was punishable,” says Brügger.

Voucher of 100 francs from the deputy party leader

On the part of the liberals, the story sounds a little different. «We thank Mr. Brügger for the tip. Because cyber security is an important topic,” says FDP media spokesman Marco Wölfli when asked by Blick.

Philipp Brügger would then have asked the party for a small fee for pointing out the vulnerability. “We didn’t go into that,” says Wölfli.

“We drew our conclusions from the case at the end of 2020 and are constantly sensitizing our employees to the topic of cybersecurity,” the FDP continues.

More than two years later, Philipp Brügger went public with the story and still received the desired compensation. FDP vice president Andri Silberschmidt (29) sent the young entrepreneur a personal message on Friday and thanked him with a clothing voucher of CHF 100. (shq)
