Even after nine rounds of negotiations, Switzerland and the EU have still not found each other. That is how long the exploratory talks, as the meetings are officially called, have been going on between Secretary of State and chief negotiator Livia Leu (62) and her counterpart in the EU.
Well, even before the breakthrough comes, it is known: Leu is fed up. As the “Tages-Anzeiger” reports, she recently asked Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62) to accept her resignation. Cassis will present the personnel affairs to the entire Federal Council tomorrow.
She plans to retire in the fall
Leu therefore does not intend to leave immediately. She does not want to resign from her position as State Secretary until September. She wants to spend the years before her retirement abroad as an ambassador. Leu already worked as an ambassador before taking office in 2020, most recently in Paris.
Switzerland wants to explore in exploratory talks with the EU how bilateral relations can be continued after the failure of the framework agreement. According to the Bundesrat’s plan, the key figures for a negotiating mandate should be finalized by the end of June.
Official negotiations could start after the summer holidays. It is not clear who will lead this on the Swiss side. (lha)
