The housing shortage is getting worse. According to the forecast of the real estate consultancy Wüst Partner, up to 50,000 homes and rental properties will be missing in Switzerland in three years’ time.

SVP Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin (63) therefore invites people to a round table discussion on Friday. In addition to representatives of cities and cantons, associations are also invited. It is important to find broad solutions to alleviate the housing shortage.

Ultimately, it is up to politicians to take measures to create more living space. The parties are taking different approaches to address the problem. So far, however, they are following the familiar paths: while the bourgeoisie relies on less bureaucracy, the left’s focus is on nonprofit housing.

The most important requirements at a glance:

FDP

The liberals come up with a 6-point plan to make building more attractive again. Namely, by relaxing the regulations. In concrete terms, the FDP advocates a reduction in noise protection requirements, monument protection and homeland protection. Building permit procedures need to be accelerated. It must be possible to build higher and closer.

Vegetable

Community housing is the path the Greens are taking. The tenancy rights are expanded. Municipalities will be given a right of pre-emption for land and real estate. In addition, the eco-party advocates the introduction of rent control to prevent excessive returns.

GLP

The GLP also wants to create more living space with less bureaucracy. Accelerating the approval process, more digitization and more flexible noise requirements: these are the green-liberal angles here. Harmonization of cantonal building regulations should also be considered.

SP

Like the Greens, the SP relies on non-profit housing construction, which should be promoted more. To protect tenants, cantons and municipalities could also be given the opportunity to control rents in certain areas.

Please

From the point of view of the SVP, immigration is the main cause of the housing shortage. Another argument for them to restrict them more. An initiative is in the pipeline. This aims to prevent Switzerland from having more than 10 million inhabitants.

Centre

One of the middle’s recipes against the housing shortage is to limit the possibilities to object to building projects. The party not only has an eye on the situation in the cities, but also in the countryside: it must be investigated how the second house law can be relaxed. (dba/lha)
