The initiators of the initiative to ban animal testing, which failed at the ballot box in February 2022, are not giving up. You are launching a new federal initiative. The new edition also calls for an absolute ban on animal testing in Switzerland.
Although they lost at the ballot box, the next initiative is already being launched, according to a press release on Tuesday. You owe it to the suffering laboratory animals. Animal experiments are ethically questionable and yield unreliable scientific results.
New initiative “much more moderate”
The initiative text, which was published in the Government Gazette on Tuesday, is “much more moderate” according to the initiators. It is still about an absolute ban on animal testing, but the two most controversial points of the latest initiative have been omitted.
The text ends a ban on testing on humans and the importation of goods tested on animals.
Failed in 2022 with 79 percent no
The initiators are not deterred by their defeat last year. On February 13, 2022, the Swiss voter voted no to the initiative to ban animal testing with a whopping 79 percent. The popular initiative ‘Yes to the ban on animal and human testing – Yes to research projects with incentives for safety and progress’ had called for an unconditional ban on animal testing and human testing. Animal testing should have been defined in the constitution and punished as “animal cruelty to the point of crime”.
Citizens of St. Gallen supported the initiative, supported by some 80 organizations and companies. The same group now wants to try a new approach with a more moderate referendum. (SDA)
