The municipality of Aargau wants to raise the thresholds for naturalization for foreigners again. Against the will of the government, the bourgeois majority passed two motions.

Language skills must be improved and the criminal record must be impeccable. On Tuesday, parliament passed the motion “Good knowledge of German as a condition for naturalization” by 69 to 63 votes. SVP, FDP and individual representatives of the center and GLP agreed, Groenen and SP rejected the demand.

“Exaggerated Swiss doer move”

The current language level B1 oral and A2 written should no longer be sufficient for naturalization. The federal government and most cantons have this language requirement. The Grand Council wants oral B2 as a requirement, which corresponds to the foreign language level of a baccalaureate.

The proponents of the tightening said that communication with the Swiss should be effortless. The opponents spoke of an “exaggerated Swiss doer motion”. (SDA)
