The railway network in Switzerland is being further improved and expanded. According to the plans of SBB boss Vincent Ducrot (60), one of the most important routes is between Olten and Zurich, Radio SRF reports.
However, the railway manager drives the SVP federal councilor Albert Rösti (55) to the cart. The transport minister recently said at a media conference: “It makes no sense to massively reinforce the railway line between Bern and Zurich to gain a minute or two.”
It is better to invest in the autobahn, “where there is no competition compared to the train in traffic jams”.
Ducrot wants to “drive through Switzerland faster”
Ducrot, on the other hand, insists on his suggestion. While the trains on the new “Bahn 2000” line between Olten and Bern can run at up to 200 km/h, this is not possible between Olten and Zurich. Because the route there is older and more winding. “We need to be able to drive through Switzerland faster,” Ducrot emphasizes in Radio SRF’s “Samstagsrundschau”.
The SBB boss argues for the expansion not only because of the driving speed, but also because of the capacity. “If we want to handle all traffic, we need this route in the future.” That is why a variant is being investigated with a tunnel of 30 kilometers between Rupperswil in Aargau and Zurich Altstetten.
Seven billion francs
According to the first calculations, the expansion will cost about seven billion francs. Ultimately, parliament decides whether priority should be given to the road or rail network. (Russian)
