In the voting campaign against the climate law, the SVP is not afraid to win votes unfairly. Not only does the party continue to advertise an ETH study, the results of which it distorts. Now she is turning the words into the mouth of the FDP president.

“The law is actually not perfect,” says Thierry Burkart (47), who spreads the No Commission led by the SVP on various social media channels – along with a photo of the FDP leader, the party logo and the big Slogan: ” No power-guzzling law.”

FDP for, SVP against

The impression is given that Burkart is one of the opponents of the law. At last Saturday’s delegates’ meeting, the FDP only just passed the climate protection law with a large majority.

That’s what the climate law is about

With the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement, Switzerland committed to no longer emit greenhouse gases by 2050. Now this goal must be enshrined in law. The climate protection law is an indirect counter-proposal to the Glacier Initiative, which also called for the complete phase-out of fossil fuels by 2050. The law now on the table does not impose a ban. Instead, the replacement of oil and gas heating systems will be financed for a total of CHF 2 billion over the next 10 years. 1.2 billion is earmarked for the promotion of innovative technologies for climate protection.

In the article from “20 Minutes”, from which Burkart’s quote comes, Burkart really says that he is not completely satisfied with the law. The reason is the subsidies it provides – and which are of little use to the liberals on principle. Mind you, Burkart blames the SVP for getting the law out that way. “The SVP’s total refusal to seek compromise has pushed the left-Greens through more of their demands,” he said angrily.

“This is an unfair voting campaign”

The FDP does not appreciate the fact that the SVP is now misusing this ruling for its referendum campaign. “The statement has been taken completely out of context,” says FDP spokesman Marco Wölfli. “This is an unfair voting campaign!” The party intervened, after which the FDP logo was removed from the post. The FDP expects the affected messages to be removed. The SVP has not yet responded to a renewed intervention.

SVP National Councilor Michael Graber (41), who is leading the voting campaign, admits that the use of the letters may have gone a little too far. However, he does not find it problematic to use Burkart’s statement for his own purposes. The quote is his. We draw the conclusion that people should vote no. That’s not misleading.”

He accuses the proponents of the law of using statements by SVP federal councilor Albert Rösti (55) to promote a yes. However, as climate minister, Rösti has to represent the opinion of the entire Federal Council, and it is clear: he is in favor of the law. Even though he was still against it as a member of the National Council.
