Ignazio Cassis wants to remain a member of the Federal Council: “I really enjoy my work and I can now show a lot of experience,” he said in an interview with the “SonntagsZeitung”.
“I am therefore happy to make myself available for another four years. But in the end, parliament decides,” says Cassis. He was elected to the Federal Council in September 2017 to succeed his fellow party member Didier Burkhalter, who had resigned. Cassis took over the Swiss Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) from him. In October 2023, Switzerland will re-election the National Council and the Council of States. Elections for the Federal Council will then take place in December.
Important files are pending
The foreign department of Cassis is dealing with important files related to Switzerland’s position in conflicts – particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine – and relations with the EU. For example, in May 2023, Switzerland took over the presidency of the UN Security Council – in which it has been represented for two years since January – for a month. Cassis chaired the first Security Council meeting convened by Switzerland on Wednesday on the topic of trust.
During Cassis’ tenure, negotiations for a framework agreement with the EU in 2021 were broken off. At the end of March 2023, the Federal Council announced that the main parameters of a negotiating mandate should be drawn up by the end of June. At the end of April, a total of nine exploratory rounds took place between Switzerland and the EU on the framework agreement, the next one is scheduled for May 30. (SDA)
