We have the best mail in the world – at least that’s the title used by Swiss Post in its advertisements, which last autumn received from the Universal Postal Union for the sixth time in a row.
The state-owned company aims to be the Swiss flagship that will propel our country forward in the digital age. It’s just weird: in times when every online customer can determine with a mouse click at what time the Coop delivers the ready-made pizza, toppings and toothpaste to her home, the post office still can’t.
When will the package arrive?
On April 30, Blick ordered a pan with a lid from Galaxus, after which the web retailer immediately thanked him for the order by e-mail. An email arrives from the post office that the package will be delivered on May 4 or 5.
When now? It could probably be set up on Thursday, May 4 – if you knew what time the package would arrive. But you can’t do that on Friday. Then you could have the package delivered to a different address. In the private competition, this can be done without any problems and in a very short time. If online retailers use this to ship their packages, the customer can, for example, collect them from the office in the center of Bern.
You could – as the post office suggests when asked – have the package delivered nearby. You should know that Swiss Post will celebrate its 175th anniversary next year. And 175 years ago, it was probably the case that the good Mrs. Müller or the dear Mrs. Meier next door was a housewife and home. Today, however, both have paid jobs.
Google first, then register
You can also have the package delivered to a different address by post. Only: it’s not that easy with the best post office in the world. On request, it advises the customer to have the package delivered to, for example, a MyPost 24 machine or a PickPost point. This would guarantee that the customer can pick up their package whenever they have time – even late at night or early in the morning.
So google: And tiptop, there is such a MyPost-24 machine at the main station of Bern. Only: You must register there. «Register for My Post 24: Create a customer account by registering in the ‹My Post› customer portal at www.swisspost.ch. You will receive a code within three working days to verify your address and thus your account. Now you can make full use of My Post 24 and PickPost.”
In three business days? But the package will arrive tomorrow – or the day after tomorrow! Who knows!
The private ones are just a few clicks away
You can also leave the package on the couch, in the garden shed or in the garage, says the Post. Assuming the parcel postman isn’t a cat climber or burglar, he won’t get there. And then: You have to register at the post office, click through countless options on the website, and yet you can’t find how to choose a later delivery day. For example, May 7, as the post suggests.
Meanwhile, the package with the private contest would have long since been redirected to the stationery around the corner with a few clicks. On Sunday you would cook with the new pan. Instead, you’d have to struggle on the Post websites to perhaps receive the pan on Monday.
Just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, the following email arrives: Delivery “probably on May 4, 2023 between 7:30 and 11:30 a.m.” Now you should quickly decide whether you can arrange the time or not. Until 10.00 am, after that it is no longer possible. – Damn! So let it stay that way.
The package has arrived, the stomach remains empty
At 10:48 a.m. on Thursday morning, an email reported that the package had been delivered at 10:22 a.m. Because there was no room for it in the milk box, it was placed in front of the front door – where it fortunately still stands after work.
Only: Cooking is not. The huge package only contains the lid, but not the pan (which isn’t the post office’s fault though). Next time, it’s probably better to choose an online retailer that only partners with the second best parcel service in the world. Or is it better to go to department store Loeb? Brand new you can just take the pan with you – without registration!
