National Councilor Lorenz Hess (left, Center Party/BE) wants to impose sanctions on companies that do not guarantee equal pay. The National Council accepted his proposal. (archive image)

Motionary Lorenz Hess (middle/BE) summed up the wage situation with the words “Women’s anger and men’s silence”. It must now be an end to lip service. Those who do not pay the same wages for the same work must be prosecuted.

The majority of the National Council followed Hess and supported his motion. The decision was made by a vote of 102 to 84. Only the SVP and FDP and some middle representatives rejected the initiative. This now goes to the Council of States.

If the small chamber also approves the initiative, the Federal Council must supplement the law on gender equality by providing for specific sanctions for non-compliance with equal pay and defining the corresponding criteria.
