What does Johann Schneider-Ammann actually do all day? You don’t know – and that’s a good thing. He is back in private life and has left the government behind.
It is different with Ueli Maurer. Again and again he had “Kä Luscht” on the duties of a federal councilor. Now he is mainly politically active again as a former federal councilor. Only, that’s no longer his job since he gave up his membership in the state government.
As a retired member of the Federal Council, Maurer can do what the law allows. But he also knows that the Chinese did not bring him to the embassy as a private individual, but as a former minister who always maintained good contacts in the Middle Kingdom. It is clear that China wants to use it for its own purposes.
And of course he doesn’t have to ask the sitting federal councilors if he can pay a visit to the Chinese ambassador. But he must avoid the appearance of engaging in parallel diplomacy. Moreover, China is not just any country. It is a world power that violates democratic values.
Maurer should not have allowed the propaganda photo of the rally and he could have checked the contents of the press release. After almost 14 years in government, he knows exactly how such an image works. Apparently he didn’t want to suffer – so it’s another provocation from Ueli Maurer. No longer as a member of the Bundesrat, but as a political pensioner.
