According to Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, Italy’s blockade on taking back refugees is likely to last for months. “At least I don’t see any signs of anything moving,” she said. (archive image)

“The pressure on Italy’s southern border is enormous, so the attitude is partly understandable,” said Baume-Schneider in an interview published Thursday with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”. Switzerland has asked Italy to take over in about 300 cases. However, in about 40 cases, responsibility was returned to Switzerland because six months had passed.

The Minister of Justice does not believe in additional pressure on Italy. “We have to find a solution in talks with Italy. I will soon meet Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi,” she announced.

According to Baume-Schneider, Switzerland and its European partners are interested in continuing with the reform of the Dublin system ahead of the European Parliament elections in spring 2024. Under the former Dublin system, the country of first reception would actually be responsible for the asylum procedure.

Baume-Schneider argued in an interview for stricter controls at the Schengen external borders in the context of the Dublin reform. “There are many people on the road who want to come to Europe for economic reasons. You have no right to asylum. You have to be consistent.” In return, solidarity in the distribution of recordings across European countries must be improved.
