Former Geneva Councilor Pierre Maudet (45) was re-elected to the Geneva Council of State on Sunday. According to preliminary results, he is in sixth place with 1331 votes ahead of the social democrat Carole-Anne Kast. After being expelled from government and from his former FDP party, Maudet returned to politics with his newly founded “Freedom and Social Justice” movement.
The first surprise came in mid-March, when his movement won 10 seats in the cantonal parliament out of nowhere. And now comes the second joke: Maudet returns to the government, which is also losing its left-wing majority.
Maudet resigned from the Council of State at the end of October 2020 after an affair over a luxury trip to Abu Dhabi in 2015. According to a Federal Supreme Court ruling of late October 2022, Maudet was guilty of taking benefits during this trip and the visit at the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
