The new state councilor of the canton of St. Gallen is probably called Esther Friedli.

The new alderman of the canton of St. Gallen is probably called Esther Friedli (45). Born Bernese, who has lived in Toggenburg for a long time and has gained four years of experience as SVP country councilor in Bern, is clearly ahead in the second vote. After 62 of the 75 communities, Friedli received 48,590 votes. Her competitor Barbara Gysi (58) of the SP is behind with 26,872 votes so far.

For the first time in its history, the SVP should succeed in winning a seat in the Council of States in the canton of St.Gallen. Not even Friedli’s partner, ex-SVP chairman Toni Brunner (48), succeeded. He tried twice, the last time in 2011 against SP veteran Paul Rechsteiner (70).

Gysi probably doesn’t stand a chance

Friedli has now cleared the way for his dismissal. Rechsteiner’s fellow party member Gysi didn’t stand a chance against Friedli in conservative St. Gallen.

Already in the first ballot in mid-March, Friedli had twice as many votes as the first pursuer, Susanne Vincenz-Stauffacher (56, FDP). Franziska Ryser (31) of the Greens also participated. Vincenz-Stauffacher and Ryser withdrew after the first vote. (sf)
