Switzerland was able to fly its embassy staff out of Sudan with the help of neighboring Germany and France.

It now appears that specialists from the Swiss army have also been deployed in secret. On Sunday, the Federal Council approved the deployment of members of Reconnaissance Detachment 10 (AAD 10) in Sudan. This is shown by research by Blick.

The elite soldiers were to support the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) in preparing and carrying out the evacuation. The government approved the deployment of up to ten professionals from the Swiss army for this purpose in Sudan and surrounding countries – for up to three weeks.

Trained for emergencies

The mission will be carried out armed, said the responsible Federal Councilor Viola Amherd (60) this week in military circles. For security reasons, no comment will be made on how the members of the AAD 10 have been deployed and whether they have since returned to Switzerland with the evacuated Swiss embassy staff, a spokesman for the FDFA told Blick.

The missions of the AAD 10 are often top secret, since 2004 the elite troop has repeatedly been deployed for delicate tasks abroad. The military, trained for emergency situations, specializes in the protection and repatriation of Swiss citizens from crisis areas. For example, they were used in the evacuation of 280 people from the Afghan capital Kabul in 2021. From the end of 2008, the AAD 10 special unit also planned the escape of the two Swiss hostages in Libya – the plans were rejected, however.
