The demand for a memorial site for victims of the genocide under National Socialism had come from parliament. The councils adopted two motions from Alderman Alfred Heer (SVP/ZH) and State Councilor Daniel Jositsch (SP/ZH).

It is important to keep the memory alive, especially of the Holocaust and the fate of the six million Jews who died and all other victims of the National Socialist regime during World War II, the Federal Council wrote on Wednesday. There were hardly any contemporary witnesses left and the relativization of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism were currently increasing.

The federal government is contributing CHF 2.5 million towards the design, public competition and realization of the memorial site. The city of Bern will take care of the maintenance.
